I get asked for advice from almost all of my brides and one of the questions I’m sometimes asked is “should I wear heels or flats?”. My answer is actually both! And here’s why! If you’re like me, you hate wearing heels. Well, I don’t actually hate it, I love the way they look, but you will very rarely, if ever, see me in heels because they’re so uncomfortable! So when deciding what to wear for my wedding day, it was a no brainer! I chose flats. 2 hours into the wedding day though, I realized I chose the wrong kind of flats – the kind with no support and so my feet were so sore by the end of the day. But that’s a different story.
So why should you have both heels and flats for your wedding day? Choose flats to change into during the reception at the very least. This way you can dance the night away without worrying about tripping or sore feet. Flats are also a good idea to have during portrait time. I’ve heard so many brides complain that their heels are getting stuck in the ground during photos! No one wants to have to be thinking about that when you’re having your bride and groom portraits, so consider having flats for this time – or at least consider having them for when we’re walking from one location to the next!
Heels are great for the ceremony and for detail photos. There’s just something so classy about a beautiful pair of heels and I can use them to decorate multiple set ups in your detail photos! Most brides want to wear their heels during the ceremony as well. This gives you a little bit of height and helps keep your dress off the ground as you walk down the aisle.
One thing to make sure of is that if you’re wearing flats during any of your portrait time, make sure that your dress isn’t too long! A lot of times when you have your dress altered you have it altered to the length you need with your heels on. That’s great! But if your dress is too long with flats on, then I’d suggest wearing flats as we walk to different locations, but then putting your heels on once we’re at our photo destination. This way your wedding dress looks the way it should!
I hope this post helps as you decide what shoes to wear for your wedding day! If you’re one of those girls who wears heels all the time and you have absolutely no problem wearing heels throughout your entire wedding day, then I applaud you! And I may ask you to teach me your ways!!
